I have DSL running on an old Compaq Presario 1270, and to my surprise, I was able to update the BIOS to their last release via hp.com. You might consider doing this, since perhaps the problem is related to a bug in the BIOS. As usual, beware when updating a BIOS, you run the risk of messing things up entirely I have been told.
Also, I noticed in the bios for my Compaq you can restore to defaults. You might try this first before doing anything else. Hope this helps!
