Is there a configuration of apm that will tell it to shutdown my machine when the battery runs down instead of it hibernating (if that is the correct term)?

If interested, this is because my laptop doesn't paint the screen when it comes back from a hibernate / standby.  This is the same behavior as I've seen under Windows, so I know it's a hardware issue.  but I still need to get around it.

Thanks.

- you might be able to get the screen back by switching consoles in X - <ctrl> <alt> F1 or F2 maybe? As per google and as per my efforts to suspend using acpi, this is a common problem.

Maybe your bios has settings for apm hibernate/suspend?

Yes, the bios has a couple of settings.  I'm pretty sure that I've set it for maximum response - i.e. as little suspend as possible.  I know it's a hardware/firmware thing, just trying to mitigate it with other possibilities.
