gozilla, Asuming your laptop will support 1024x768, you should have to do nothing as it defaults to that resolution. My guess is that it wont. As far as not being able to read the text, try rebooting, and at the boot prompt type: fb1024x768 or fb800x600. There are quite a few options that may help you to get things going by hitting F2 at the boot prompt also. Once you get your desktop up and running go to the DSL control panel and configure your sound card there. Sorry, just noticed that you said 1024x600 not 768. Not sure how to change that other than editing your x86config file.
