Any idea why it doesn't even detect it?  Is it because I'm running it from a CD?

Does your older hardware work with cardbus?

Check to ensure you pcmcia card is "true" pcmcia and not cardbus

Gold strip where pins go into card = cardbus
no strip = pcmcia

How do you check your PCMCIA card?  I'm asuming you're not talking about the Linksys card (it's got a gold strip but at the end near the pins but not actually over the pins as it's on a different side of the rectangle).  My PCMCIA card is covered with a little door that opens when I slide the linksys card in...how can I get to it without messing up the computer (it's an IBM thinkpad X31 and my employer owns it so I don't want to ruin it..plus it's fairly new).

So does DSL only work with PCMCIA or cardbus?  Sorry for all the questions but I'm a complete Linux noob

thanks for your time

I just was looking around a bit more and it looks like you were talking about the wireless card....and this definetly looks like cardbus (i.e. gold stripe).  Am I sunk?  Which wireless card should I get?

DSL works with PCMCIA and Cardbus.

HOWEVER, many older laptop computers do NOT work with Cardbus devices so if this is the case, then you are sunk.

Generally speaking with some exceptions, if you can sucessfully use a Cardbus device on a laptop while running Windows, then you can probably get it to work while running DSL.
