I am writing this assuming that the person reading this knows nothing about Linux. If you are reading this and think I am being overly siplistic, just remember that there are people reading this who will be the future userbase of GNU/Linux and I want to encourage them rather than scaring them away with geek jargon.

Try this for starters:
Once everything has loaded all the way up, open up a terminal by double-clicking on the little penguin icon in the upper left part of your screen. If you HAVE NOT installed dsl to your hard drive (meaning that you are running it off the CD), type 'sudo su' when the terminal screen pops up to become the 'Super User'. If you HAVE installed dsl to your hard drive, type 'su' when the terminal comes up. At this point, you will be asked for the root password that you set up during the installation. Type the root password and hit enter. If you typed the password correctly, you are now the 'Super User' and can perform any and all administrative functions.
Now you will want to type the command 'sndconfig' (note that there is no 'ou' between the 's' and the 'n'!) and hit enter. This will launch the sndconfig program in the terminal itself. Note that your mouse will not click on the options in this program. You will need to use the tab and enter keys. Follow the dialog in the program. It WILL complain that it's not a good idea to run sndconfig in X (the graphical mode used by dsl). Just hit 'OK' anyway and try not to worry about it
