just picked up a used t22 (900mhz, 128 mb RAM 20gb HD),  & pluged in my "Best Data v.92" linux friendly serial modem (real external modem) but....
nothin!  :(
I would love to get the internal Lucent Win-modem working,  but first things first.

How do I get DSL (or my t22) to recognize the 'real' modem plugged into my serial port?

I've used DSL with this modem on 5-6 different desktops as well as a DELL inspiron5000 laptop with no problems.

Hmm..

If the modem works with DSL and other computers and no hassle, then my guess is that the T22 PCMCIA/Cardbus services are not working.

Or if this modem is a totally external modem and you are plugging it into the RS-232 COM1 / COM2 port, then you have other problems.

I would try to see if your COM1 port has been mapped to the wrong linux port number.  Sometimes in DSL, COM1 does not equal /dev/ttyS0 for example

try

/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3
/dev/ttyS4

just to double check this.

Also, the problem may be that the stupid IBM pointer thingie or other stuff is conflicting with the same IRQ that is used by your serial ports.

Boot into the IBM BIOS and turn off the pointer thingie and especially the Infrared or I/R port and then reboot and see if you can talk to your modem.

Good Luck.

Yes sir!  I had already tried every ttyS0 - ttyS4 before I posted my problem.  So as for your next suggestion... check the BIOS
right there in my face was Serial Port <disabled>.  I switched that to enabled and here I am typing on my brand-new (to me at least) laptop!  Thanx for your help!:)

Now.... I know its difficult but how would I begin to get the internal Lucent Winmodem to work? I figured out some info about it:

port: com3
LT V.92 Data+Fax Modem Version 8.22.0.0

any ideas?

You can try to get on to the Internet with your external modem.

Then "Enable Apt" or "Synaptic" from the menu.

Then:

sudo apt-get install ltmodem

or install from inside synaptic.

It might work. No guarantees.
