Hmm..
If the modem works with DSL and other computers and no hassle, then my guess is that the T22 PCMCIA/Cardbus services are not working.
Or if this modem is a totally external modem and you are plugging it into the RS-232 COM1 / COM2 port, then you have other problems.
I would try to see if your COM1 port has been mapped to the wrong linux port number. Sometimes in DSL, COM1 does not equal /dev/ttyS0 for example
try
/dev/ttyS1 /dev/ttyS2 /dev/ttyS3 /dev/ttyS4
just to double check this.
Also, the problem may be that the stupid IBM pointer thingie or other stuff is conflicting with the same IRQ that is used by your serial ports.
Boot into the IBM BIOS and turn off the pointer thingie and especially the Infrared or I/R port and then reboot and see if you can talk to your modem.
