I just tested DSL on a very old IBM ThinkPad 600E. Works fine, no problems. Except that when using framebuffer, the colour channels have swapped. I.e. the usually orange background is purple, the red process meter is blue, the green back arrow of Firefox is red, but blue is blue.
Not using framebuffer renders the system unusable slow. So it isn't an option. Windows lists the graphics adater as NeoMagic MagicGraph256AV.

Try a lower color density, such as 16bit.

Failing that, try Xfree86.
