I installed DSL 1.5 on my laptop. It works great but only detects the CPU at 75 MHz Pentium II,  even though it's a 300 MHz CPU. If I boot to the live CD it reports the CPU speed correctly and reports 595 bogomips instead of the 169 it reports on the hard drive install. Has anybody had this problem?

The first thing I would do is check the BIOS for the CPU settings.  Most computers have options that slow the processor on boot and when it is unplugged.  This is to extend battery life.  These can be turned off.  

Also, Intel has a program called "SpeedStep" that sets the mobile processor clock to factory specs.  (Basically a mobile processor is a factory overclocked processor).  "SpeedStep" runs in the background of Window$ and sets the clock speed of the processor depending on if your a plugged in or not, the load on the CPU, etc.  You can read more about the Linux SpeedStep project here.

However, sometimes it reports the right speed. (I am booting from a flash card, so I can't compare the difference with or without a cd). It looks like it might be different between when you boot from cold, or restart, but I haven't worriedtoo much about it because dsl runs ok whatever the speed, and I want maximum battery life

On my laptop, there is no bios setting i can get to for boot cpu speed.
