I attempted to rip a song from one of my cds but I keep getting the message that my cdrom is not capable of this.  I have a compaq armada 7800 24xcdrom.  Is there a setting that I am not sure about or is this cdrom just not capable of ripping?

If the CDROM can read the CD then I don't see why it wouldn't be capable of ripping.  All the CDROM needs to do is read the CD.  It's the program that converts the format.  What program are you using to rip?

Not sure what you're using to rip but GRip is the program to use. It's in the repository. It works really well.

I tried Grip and gcombust.  There was another comand line one I tried.  They all say that my cdrom does not support this.  I can play CDs with no problem.  I can't believe that the cdrom won't support this so there must be something that I am missing here.  I was hoping that someone else had already seen this and had a simple solution.  I will see what cdparanoia actually responds with so I can provide more info.  I tried to find the specs for my laptop again so I could see if there was something obvious but haven't had any luck.  I know I have seen them on the HP/Compaq webiste before so they should still be there.

Will keep looking and thanks for the responses.
