I used cdparanoia to see what was going on and with the -vsQ option to test the drive it looks like the drive is not CDDA.  I was thinking that the CDROM is connected to the onboard sound so no direct access is actually done when playing a CD therefore that is why I can play a CD but can't rip.  I loned my USB CDRW out to a friend so when I get it back I will give it a try.  Thanks for all the help guys.
