Actually, the Sony laptop is running a remastered version of Puppy Linux ... with XF86_SVGA X-server.

It's a long time since I tried the XF86_SVGA X-server with DSL, but I think MPlayer worked OK.  Try mikshaw's mplayer-xfree86.tar.gz version.  This version should suit either the full XFree86 or XF86_SVGA.
And with both drivers I believe you should choose "x11" as the output device.

The download link for XF86_SVGA is mentioned in the forum post I referred to.

yeah I got it working now, i had to choose the video codec, (the file I was testing was a divx).

I'm using the xfree86 dsl, with my own compiled version of mplayer.

it's really slow on my laptop, it will play the first few frames and just freeze, the seek keeps going, but the movie doesn't move.

I'm guessing there's no way to get -vo xv to work is there? I can get x11 working, but it's really slow...
