I have a Toshiba Portege 320CT and eveything works ok except that on boot up the console disappears below the screen. However I know to type in the username and password then off starts the GUI which is great. However if I use 800 x 600 resolution I lose out on big chunks of hte screen left and right of the window because the laptop has a wide screen.

Does anyone know if it is possible to configure the GUI to fill the whole screen. It uses 1024 x 600 resolution!

Try looking at my solution for the 800*480 screen on a libretto:

I suspect something similar may work for you. If you use the DSL 2 & vga=ask options in the LILO or GRUB command line & then selelct one of the text modes offered it will get you to the command prompt. Then you can issue the Xvesa -listmodes command to find the correct mode numbers for your screen.
