Hi there,
I thought that I would tell of my sound settings on my ancient Compaq Presario 1240. I investigated the bios setting and found that irq=5 and dma=1 were being used. After fooling around with those settings, all I got was stuttering nonsense. Finally, I went back to the bios and changed the settings to irq=7 and dma=3, (other dma to dma=1). I then opened a console as root and typed:
modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=3 mpu_io=0x330 esstype=1868
and it all works great! I added the line to the bootlocal.sh file and it now loads automatically when I boot from my USB pendrive.
PS. Also Windows reports the ess audiodrive chip as 1869
