Title says it all really.

When you Enable Apt on DSL 2.1b, the sources.list points to oldstable (aka Woody).   Running apt-get had problems, particularly with Perl.  This was resolved by changing to stable (aka Sarge) in sources.list.

Following this, I was able to successfully apt-get a number of packages.  However, on trying to apt-get install xine-ui, I ran into a problem with one of it's dependencies, libxv1 which complains about an existing copy of libXv.so.1.0 which is in the  xlibs package.

This smacks of a distro version mismatch and perhaps I need to do a dist-upgrade.  This is somewhat disturbing as Perl is clearly from Sarge, but I get the feeling that xlibs is from Woody.

Does this mean that DSL 2.1b is a mixture of packages from both Woody and Sarge?  What is the recommended approach to package management on DSL 2.x?

Should I be building my own packages from source (shudder)?  I can do this, but I moved from Slackware to Debian-based distros so I wouldn't have to do that so often.

If you're looking to install a bunch of multimedia applications, but you still want to use a Debian-type system, you'd probably be better off just installing Debian, or Ubuntu if you have to have the latest packages.
