I apologize for such a mundane question, but I am a relative newbie to this distro. How do I install an application such as Abiword? I assume I would use the tar version...download it, and then what...? Can I use apt-get, and if so, what is the correct syntax?

Thanks for the help. This is a great distro that has saved the life of an old laptop...a Toshiba CDS 225, 133mhx, 32mb, 2 gb hd. Its jsut about the only distro that will work on here since the others are so bloated. I want to keep it chugging along!

sudo apt-get install synaptic

it installs synaptic, a graphical package installer, great app!
just run synaptic from bash

Basically you just need to learn how to use apt-get, search the forum.

FYI,

If you want to install the Synaptic installer GUI program and be able to use it by clicking on a desktop icon instead of having to execute it as user 'root' from the command line (sudo), try out my Synaptic install script.
