Has anyone been able to get dial up to work using the PPPconfig in DSL?  I tried several weeks ago, listed all of the problems, and was advised to try pon.  That was not the problem, the modem is being accessed and is dialing, and somehow the script is not sending the acknowledgment because I get a voice message error from the telco.  I was able to set-up dial up in Windows networking, DOS, and in Linux using GK Dial.  Thought I would try WVDial for DSL, so I downloaded from myDSL, added it through emelFM and found it on the myDSL menu.  But could not select the application, so I tried several applications from the menu, instead of the desktop, and each one worked, Beaver, Ted, XMMS, mastermind, and pppconfig.   So now I have a GUI front end I cannot access and pppconfig that will not work.  Back to pppconfig, try CHAP, CHAT, PAP, ten digit phone number, eleven digit phone number, 7 digiit phone number each in combination with the protocols. Still not working, verify the login and password, they are correct.  After trying all of these I now have 5 broken CD's, dozen broken pencils and barely usable keyboard.  Have to take frustration out on something.  I am not easily discourage, but am ready to consider SuSe 7.3 was easy compared to this.  I already have to select my monitor resolution at each boot up, otherwise I get wavy lines of unreadable text.  I like the compactness of this distribution but at some point the time spent trying to simply get a basic dial-up to work will not be worth it.

I set mine up with the dial up config under Net Config or Dial Up in the control panel.  I just hit config chose provider as the name, dynamic, chat, login and pass, phone,  comm port and it worked fine.  Chances are if you hear your modem dial your fine, however some ISP's don't work with linux.  Not all modems will work with linux so good luck.

Dear u2musicmike!!

This is a really interesting one thing can u make some more clear after setting these config(name, dynamic, chat, login and pass, phone) how to identify comm port?? in my case I am using Lucent card connected to my thin client pci slot. And I have taken a Dial-up connection where i have to use my user name,Number and password.

For setting the com port, it was no problem for me because I had an old ISA modem with jumpers on the card.  In my case it was jumpered for com port 3.  Most pci modems that I have seen are winmodems and need drivers.  DSL does work with some of the Lucent winmodems so you might try each com port starting with 4 going to 1 in the config or minicom program until you hear dial tone.  If you need drivers, search this forum on your Lucent card type and you might get lucky.

u2musicmike, thanks for the reply.  The steps you took were what I had done, but I thought I would give it another try using the instructions you had.  I followed the menu options for configuration again and got the same result.  I doubt it is a hardware problem since this is an external serial port modem, and it is not one of the newer external winmodems.  It works with several other operating systems, including Linux.  There is something in the script that is not working properly, I should not have to be an engineer to get dial-up working.  There appears to be a problem in the protocol or dialing sequence, because I get a telco recording after the modem dials.  I am using default, standard AT protocols, with chat, the same settings that work on other distros.  I wish I could have accessed WVDial after I downloaded it, I may have been able to isolate the problem.  WVDial shows up in myDSL on the desktop, but cannot be accessed.  Really wish DSL would work since it is very memory efficient.    Thanks again for your suggestions.
