I went to Barnes & Noble this weekend and read up on using Knoppix in an O'Reilly book.  There's a boot cheat code I'm looking forward to using: type pci=irqmask=0x0e98.  The Knoppix website explains that this can be used when a laptop's pointer device doesn't work (some problem in the BIOS).  Since DSL is based on Knoppix, I'm thinking it's worth a try.

Haven't tried it yet, but will when I can take care of MITOL (More Important Things Of Life) and post it here.

Yep, that did it!  Using this cheat code when booting made the touchpad work: dsl pci=irqmask=0x0e98.  And it works for all Knoppix-based distros, replacing dsl with the appropriate word.
