so...
embedded if you want to run dsl INSIDE windows. this is much slower, as it emulates another machine, somehow.

dsl-1.0rc2.iso: you burn that iso to a cd and use it a stand alone Operating System. You run from cd and if you like it, you just install it to hard drive.
there you will have the second question..some many ways to install..what shall I choose? ..come back here for hints.

as for syslinux..I don't know. I've never downloaded it.

syslinux should be 4 old pc who cannot boot with the normal version. Syslinux is also in the boot floppy of dsl, so is lighter but there are some modules missing.
In the normal cd there is isolinux that is more complete
