User Feedback :: Linux Program Names

I have just shown my DSL rebuilt P166 to my wife who is a teacher at the same school as me, she loved firefox and said she wants one in her class room, however she killed herself laughing at the word processor called Beaver and the spreadsheet that looks like Slag (Siag) You see children will pick up on those names, I can guarantee it. Could this be why microsoft have ruled so far where they have word we have Beaver and where they have excel we have slag? Even the title of this distro Damn small linux is faintly amusing to a junior school pupil.

:D

Just a thought (not a very serious one)
Aorta (Phil)

i was thinking Beaver meant, wood, as in tree, which turns into paper, with is a document, cause Beavers chew on trees.

...not sure what 'slag' is.... or Siag for that matter...

I guess i'm naive... :(

I don't think the name Beaver is what kills it, it's just no where near as good as Word.  Like siag is no Excel.

Have you tried open office?  If you have the memory (or the swap space) they have friendlier names.

I'm with Phil, as a newbie [2 days old] I also had to chuckle at the concept of writing on a beaver....

I tried [without success] to rename some items.

Hi
Personally I like the fact that DSL and most open source software does not have to be commercially viable or politically correct.  Besides I think one of BEAVERs creators last name starts with B and the rest is pulled from
EARLY ADVANCED EDITOR.  And SIAG is from "Scheme In A Grid".  Anyway what could be more funny than naming a computer company "APPLE" or a progamming language "JAVA"
