I have a Dell Desktop with Altec Speakers. Speakers work when running windows xp. No Idea why they don't work in dsl. But I suppose that notebooks are more suited to dsl because the speakers are part of the computer.

Actually it depends on your sound chipset, not the speakers.

Do you know what model/chipset it is?
If that info isn't displayed in the system stats, try a lspci -v
You may need to use alsa if it isn't compatible otherwise.
