Other Help Topics :: Noisy harddrive

I have installed DSL on my laptop and have set the bios so that the hard drive stops spinning after 2 min. But it keeps spinning within short. Is there a way to stop DSL accessing the harddrive after booting? The harddrive is very noisy and the laptop is only showing pics as a picture frame.
You could look into this http://www.agol.dk/quietlinux/
and this
http://mops.uci.agh.edu.pl/doc/hdparm/README.acoustic

Or get a slower drive that's one reason I went with a 4gb rather then 10. Since my laptop has no fan to begin with the 4gb runs virtually silent also.

You could try things out with 'hdparm'

Thanks,

I tried the tips from QuietLinux, and that helped a little. The hdparm didn't make any difference at all.

Is there a way to find out which processes that access the HD? Or maybe create a ram-drive to write the log files to?

Ah right, forgot to mention the hdparm stuff only works on IDE drives (only newer versions contain support for other types afaik).

If you are using a frugal, you can use "toram" to load the 50mb image to the ramdisk, then the hdd won't be used afterwards.
