Apps :: file managers

what are some good apt-getable file managers that are comparable to Konquerer and Nautilus? i do not like the double pane old looking Emelfm.

any suggestions?

rox filer is supposedly comparable (in look and feel) to those, I think.

It's available as a mydsl package.

Wyatt23, I used to feel like that about the venerable emelFM at first.  It does take getting used to. But now I wouldn't swap it for fat-bottomed Konqueror for the world.

Try the click 'n' drag capability (hold down middle mouse button).  Or the fact that you can just click on a tar archive and it will expand automatically into a temp file and show you the contents.

And then there's the configurable features - I add buttons for dsl unpacking & repacking, and for iso mounting/editing/burning. And the configurable launching-according-to-file-extensions - I add one for .rtf (Ted).  And I change the Edit button to use scite (for editing scripts), but leave the default viewer alone.

It's a great program.  Rox lasted about 20 seconds with me. Horses for courses, of course.

I agree with WoofyDugfock (great name by the way!).  I used Rox for a while and it is similar to what the world is used to (typical graphical file managers).  And I thought emelfm was kinda stupid...  in a non-intuitive computer-geek-text-loving sort of way (I grew up on a macintosh so that should tell you how much i'm into the graphical file manager).  However....

Emelfm is extremely powerful,  useful and fast to navigate (once you learn about the arrows and different keys).  Go ahead...  try Rox for a while but I think you would grow to love Emelfm if you force yourself to use it for a few hours.

I'm the guy who MADE the rox filer myDSL extension and I prefer emelfm for day-to-day use.

Rox is an excellent program, especially for browsing a folder that is full of image files.  It has a "pinboard" mode that supports the creation of desktop icons like the xtdeskop program that comes with DSL.  It also has a VERY powerful "find" feature that is great for file searches.

But in my opinion, emelfm is faster and better for day-to-day file management tasks once you get the hang of using it.
