Ok, so it seems like a good idea. DSL on steroids, right? Still small, but with more apps or more functionality.
My experience was ambiguous. I launched DSL-N and got the same purple Saturn background, fewer icons, no torsmo (why did you get rid of this?), some apps failed - what one might expect from an alpha release ... BUT ...
Overall I just really couldn't see any difference between DSL and DSL-N. This was just like another alpha version of DSL. Here is my constructive criticism:
1. On the web site, do a better job of differentiating between DSL and DSL-N; kind of like a mission statement for each product. Right now it's not clear how DSL-N is different except it's bigger.
2. Re-theme DSL-N. When people launch the OS they should know immediately that they are using a different product.
3. Use the larger size to support more hardware by default, *especially (wireless) network cards*. I think when someone launches a live cd and it automatically gets them online, there is a big WOW factor.
4. Continue to stick to only one application per unit of functionality. No two word processors, no two file managers, no two music players. For people new to Linux, sometimes multiple apps that do the same thing is confusing (no offense to Windows users).
5. One of the icons on your desktop should be a link to DONATE!!! Don't feel bad asking for something in return. PBS does! NPR does!
Otherwise, you guys are on the right track. Just define the project better (or tell me I'm lazy for not finding the link to the project definition |
