User Feedback :: Install hangs up at "xauth: creating new authority
I downloaded and tried to install DSL images dsl-3.2.iso and dsl-3.2-syslinux.iso. They both stop installing and hang up at:
xauth:creating new authority file /home/dsl/xXauthority
xauth:creating new authority file /home/dsl/xXauthority
It says that twice like above.
I had first wiped the hard drive using Autoclave 0.3 to get rid of WindowsXP.
Then set up 2 partitions:
hda1 is Linux type 83, 5 GB space for main program
hda2 is Linux type 82, 1.1 GB space for swap
Does it matter which one is first on the hard drive?
I made them both xf3 types. Not sure if that is correct.

You might want to read my post about getting DSL to run on a Thinkpad 560e. I had a similar problem and found a way to fix it.

It still does not work. I repartitioned and reformatted to make a 5GB fat16 and 1GB fat16 for swap. It still hangs in the same place.
What is vfat and how do I do it. I am a newbie to Linux.
Thanks
By vfat I mean fat16, which is the standard format for DOS/Windows file systems.
But I don't think that has anything to do with your problem. My guess is that your laptop needs XF86_SVGA and an appropriate XF86Config file.
Am I correct in assuming that you have already tried the various options given by the xsetup program? Do you end up with a funtioning text-based linux operating system? That is, do you end up with a dsl@box prompt?
Hi,
I am having exactly the same problem with installing DSL on an old Toshiba Tecra 8300. This is after booting with the nopcmcia option. Did you finally get a solution for this issue.
Strange thing is that I had a perfectly working Fedora core 2 installation on there before. I wiped the whole disk with GParted and created two partitions, one 5.5Gb ext3 and one 500Mb linux swap file.
Cheers,
Patrick
