X and Fluxbox :: xfree86 help

ok, i have been looking though the guids and i have been using windows my hole life and im just starting to understand the basics of linux..... if i can get xfree86 working with nVIDIA and have some dual screen options then i might not bother getting a windows xp disk to fix my computer....

when i read the guids for this app.. i just get confused and it all seems so complicated... even from the mydsl app info file for xfree86 confuses me....

so is there a super windowsnoob guide to getting xfree86 to work?...
or is it posible for somone to explain some of the complicated steps involved?

thanks, bumross!

edit:  isnt it posible for sombody to make a .dsl download that does everything itself?... i guess you would still have to do some configuring when linux is booted....

edit II: even this confuses me:
This package contains the XFree86 X-server, many video and input drivers. openGL drivers driver info: http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/Status.html

THIS IS NOT A CLICK AND PLAY PACKAGE.

You need to add 2 files.

1. CHANGE

/home/dsl/.xserverrc

to:

exec /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -nolisten tcp

(copy included in /home/dsl/XFree86_config_files)

2. CREATE

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

If you Google on XF86Config-4 and nVidia, I'm sure you will find many examples that will give you an idea of what to do
ive already googled it and everything but... it all just goes back to the complicated guides.... thanks though.
I assume you have got your .xserverrc set up by now.

For the config file:
You just need any generic XF86Config-4 but you'll just need to modify the Driver section to have something like
Code Sample
Driver "nvidia"

Yes.  Something like:

1. Boot any Knoppix cd.

If it works:

2. Copy the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to your hard drive etc.

3. Boot dsl.  Install the XFree86.dsl.  Delete /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and overwrite with the file from Knoppix.

4. cntrl-alt-backspace to quit X

5. Type xinit to restart..

If it's working, then it will be will the Vesa driver.  You want nvidia.  So ...

6. Install the nvidia extension.

7. Run the nvidia install thingumy on the fluxbox (right-click) menu (I'm on an old dsl with 2.4.31 kernel so I'm not sure about the 2.4.26 extension)

I can't recall if it fixes .xserverrc for you _ I think it might.

8. Quit X and restart as above.

If you're on a widescreen laptop, you'll probably not be running at 1280x800 since the knoppix autoconfig for xf86 is incapable of doing 1280x800 for some reason.

You can get 1280x800 by adding a modeline to the file - post again if you need that.
