X and Fluxbox :: Gdk-Warning ** what's that?
hi guys,
I get this message when I try to launch dillo or firefox or whatever "colorful" app:
Gdk-Warning **: locale not supported by C library
Gdk-Warning **:Visula type=static color depth=4, image bpp=4, lsb first is not supported by gdkRGB. please submit a bug report with the above values to bugzilla.gnome.org
also when I shut down the xserver, I can read this text:
warning failed to set locale
failed to load groupfiles
BScreen...
failed to read class hint!
loading th extension datasource
extension manager:checkForMismatches: no access privileges
i've choosen xvesa 800*600 4 bit color; my laptop (compaq armada 4110 p100 40mb of ram) seem not to be compliant with any other resolution.
it seems impossibile to me (in win95 it's much more colorful -and this makes me sad 'cause I want to get rid of it)...if I try framebuffer, anyway, this is what I get:
modprobe: modprobe: can't locate module fb0
what am I doing wrong? any suggest?
thank you
davide
really..no one can help?
I'm stuck with useless 4 color screen...
The errors that you are seeing are because of the need for 8 bit color
in most of those apps ( emelfm runs ok in 4 bit color , not much else )
You could try to setup Xfree86, using a conf file that uses a driver especially for
your video chipset, and see if that works better than the xvesa options.
( it should )
Once you CAN get to 8 bit color, your other apps should run fine.
Chances are , you 'll need a LARGE swapfile to make this happen
( 100 MB's or more ) , otherwise, you'll run out of inodes and memory
on a 40MB box long before you get XFree86 setup and installed.
If you are successful, your graphics color and speed will improve nicely.

I think links-hacked will work with 4 bit color.
You could try DSL 0.8.4 and use links-hacked instead of dillo or firefox.
Or you could try installing XFree86 like ke4nt1 said.
thanks ke4nt1 and cbagger01.
Glinks appearently doea not work either with 4bit. links does, but it' too small.
I'll give a try to Xfree86. Hopefully that xserver won't be too slow on this old machine..
I'll let you know.
