Other Help Topics :: Modifying DSL
Sorry if I've missed this in the FAQs/message boards (I did try to search them thoroughly), but I have just discovered this site and I was wondering if there was any way for a user to make a custom DSL CD.
For example, if I wanted to get vim on there and also my .vimrc and .vim directory, or mutt or whatever else, is it possible for me to take DSL and change it and make a new CD -- this would make life VERY civilised if I was ever away from my computer and having to use someone else's.
Is this possible? Is this easy? Is this pushing my luck?
Cheers,
Al
In theory you could do that, but I'm not sure if DSL supports it, Knoppix does so maybe you'll be lucky. Do a search for, remaster.
Remastering is identical to how you do it in KNOPPIX. Just make sure you get the correct cloop utils version, otherwise the compressed image won't work.
Possible? Yes.
Easy? Pretty Much.
Pushing your luck? Nuh-uh.
Check out the knoppix remastering howto: http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixRemasteringHowto
However, if you use the current knoppix to boot from and generate the cloop and iso files, it won't work. The newer knoppix releases use a version of the cloop-utils that is too new for the current damn small base. I found the easiest thing to do was use a hard-drive install of damn small instead of knoppix. You can also take a peek at http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....3;t=247
Hi,
The Knoppix howto is excellent but my ver 0.5 of DSL dose not seem to has mkisofs.
I have got to the part: Now we'll make the big KNOPPIX file which is a cloop compressed ISO 9660 filesystem : mkisofs -R -U -V "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -P "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX | nice -5 /usr/bin/create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/hda1/knx/master/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
I have folowed the how to step by step.
Please help
Many thanx
