HD Install :: compact flash to hd install
Im shot! I have gone all around the world, and hoping dsl will be it, but I am also not sure if this is the right forum, as I want to setup/boot of the compact flash, but the end result being a a hd install.
The ebox doesn't have cd rom, I have a knoppix live which worked pretty well, but can't seem to get the installer to work right. The ebox has a 1gb compact flash and a 2gb internal drive so I simply wish to get some type of bootable media on the flash, then do a hd install, so any help or directions will help!
I don't do traditional hard drive installs, but on my ebox, I boot from DSL installed pendrive and then frugal install on the ebox's flash disk module. Works fine.
cool, I am looking at the DSL pendrive install. It's a plain and simple iso, not naturally I will have to ask how to get the iso over keeping it bootable. I thought a dd would do it, but last time I tried with another distro it didn't;
dd if=the.iso of=/dev/sdg . But I am not sure on partitioning. Do I fdisk, remove all partitions and just leave the out as /dev/sdg, or make 1 large win32 or linux partition and dd making the out /dev/sdg1
That will get it booted, and not sure on the frugal install, but I will try anything, thank you for such a prompt reply, this has been 3 day's of torture! Especially once I had knoppix running off the flash, then dd'd it over but it keeps the same settings making the OS r/o, and other buggy stuff.
Looking forward to your help on completing this one, thanks and will post back once part 1 (the dsl pendrive) is working.
Which version of DSL? Which ebox?
I have ebox II which boots fine from USB-ZIP style DSL pendrive install.
So, it was fairly trivial to run the pendrive usbzip install script from DSL v3.x to a pendrive. Then boot the ebox with the pendrive and run the frugal grub install script.
We have had users use the same process to install on the ebox 2300. I used to have a 3800, but no longer.
ok, it's the ebox3851 info here.
I have followed the pen drive docs, have setup the dsl4.1-embed version and it booted off the compact flash perfect. I now have the internal 2gb drive which I want to move the install 2. I know I can dd that image over but that will keep the same r/o seutp, etc. and I need to get adobe flash and one other install on, so want to do a 'true' install, so frugal looks like the way to go (just never used) so .02 on that is naturally appreciated.
Also, I do see an app (dsl-hdinstall) which I wonder if it will do just that, install it locally? I read a little on that, and it seems it does, but as I said, I don't want to run into what I have now. I must have the OS boot, be able to save changes, and be able to intall/update things (permanent) like adding the flash app for firefox, etc.
