Multimedia :: Multitrack Recording

I fineally got DSL CD booting on my laptop, and i like it alot. It runs alot faster than my virus infested Win98 and it is much cleaner looking. The primary purpose of this laptop is to record music from my band. I was using Quartz Audio before because i liked its multitrack interface without much processor demands. I saw a linux compatible multitrack recording interface, but (forgive me for my ignorance) when something says its linux compatible does it mean with all linux or jus the big names like Red Hat and Suse? I realise that in order to add programs to my DSL i will have to HD install and I am willing to do that only if i know there is a good MultiTrack Audio Recording alternative to the one i am using with windows 98.

The challenge you will find with true multi-tracking in the linux environment
will be the latency issues, and lack of support for simultaneous audio streams
with the oss sound drivers in DSL

DSL was never designed , and certainly never 'tweaked' for audio recording uses.

Have you looked into the Ardour or DeMuDi distros ?
They have low-latency kernels, JACK audio support, Alsa sound servers,
and many fine applications already built into the distros.
(i.e., no compiling ) , and they release updated distros frequently,
with an active musicianship/engineer user baseand forum for support.

The Ardour is red-hat based, and the DeMuDi is Debian based.

I definitely want to check that out.

Audacity thats what its called. I dont need it for recording multiple tracks at once but just to be able to record a bass line, then go back through and add a drum line and stuff.

The Redhat version is called Agnula - not Ardour, which is a multitrack app.
The Debian version is called DeMuDi
