Networking :: Help with connecting to the internet in DSL
Hi,
I just got DSL and Im very happy with it, but I cant get connected to the net... My internet works fine in windows. Here are a few details:
Connection type : Broadband
Modem : External ADSL modem
Extra details : I have to dial the connection every time I want to access the internet (like dialup but quicker)
I know the username, password and number to dial, but I cant seem to get it setup within DSL, please help me out guys, I dont want to be stuck in windows for the rest of my life....
Will
You are not actually dialing up, you are verifing your account. DSL modems tend to verify accounts rather than check MAC addresses (like most cable modems). There is a Window$ program that SBC uses called Enternet that allows the computer to interface with the modem to verify the account. Lucky for you DSL comes with pppoe that does the same basic thing. I would start by running pppoeconf and see if it will allow you to interface with the modem.
--EDIT--
BTW, you will need to connect with a ethernet CAT5 cable, not USB.
Good Luck,
It is preferred to connect with a LAN cable to a network card in the computer.
However, USB >>MIGHT<< work if you do this:
Open a terminal window and type:
sudo su
modprobe cdcether
ppoeconfig
Ok, unfortunately it is a USB cable, and I have no way of converting it to a LAN cable without buying a router... I will try what you said cbagger.
Thanks,
Will
Ive tried that, and it says that cdcether doesnt exist or something like that.... I typed all that into "XTerminal". Is my only option now to buy a router??
