Laptops :: wireless with old Labtops?

Dear guys Žn girls...
using an old toshiba 2130 CT labtop (486DX4, 75Mhz, 16MB ram, 540MB HDD, PCMCIA) iŽm thinking about getting startet with wireless internet. before iŽll buy a wlan-pcmcia, i want you to tell me more about the combination of old hardware and this new parts...
at first: is it possible to configure this pcmcia cards automatically? if not, what is the dsl application that will help me?
what technical data i have to know if i must try the manual configuration?
Are there some special wlan-cards for old labtops?
How can i find out, if my pcmcia is usable with this modern parts?
are there some nice wlan-sniffer progs for dsl?

thanks!  :;):

1st make sure your pcmcia card is true pcmcia and not cardbus..you can tell by looking at where the pins go into the card...if it has a gold strip its cardbus, if not its pcmcia

DSL should autodetect and load the pcmcia drivers for wireless...just make sure you get a compatible card

The Netgear MA401 works like a dream with DSL and is usually under $20. And it's pcmcia, not cardbus.

Might find it for even less this time of the year.

thanx, iŽll try it next days an keep reporting about the succeed!
...or if u have USB try a cheapo refurb Dlink DWL-122 dongle ($20 from tigerdirect). Works great in my old Thinkpad 560z

If you dont have USB you could add a Zonet USB2 pcmcia card for ($20 from newegg) and plug the DWL-122 into that, plus you get an extra USB2 port for thumbdrives or other fun things.

Ive tried both combinations for wireless, and also accessing thubdrives via the zonet card, and directly on my thinkpad. All works great :-)

Only prob was I coulnd get airsnort to work, but I didnt try very hard and everything else (surfing/downloading etc.) works great.

You can also pluf the DWL-122 into your Tivoif you want  :-)))
