Wondered if I can run DSL on my laptop ...??

laptop will not boot from CD .. however floppy disc boots ok ..

if I create boot floppy will DSL find cdrom & then boot ? if so are there any cheat codes I should maybe boot to text console first...??

Thanks in Advance

Is the cdrom built-in, or connected by USB or PCMCIA ?

If built-in, grab the boot-0.8.0.img file from the download section, and make a boot floppy with that..

If USB, grab the bootusb-0.8.img file, and try that.

Once booted, there are a wealth of cheat codes available
at the boot: prompt by pressing f2 or f3

Typically, just let it do it's thing, (either press enter or wait) ,
and see if you get to the X desktop.

Without knowing more about your system specs.
I can't offer you too much more to go on.

With low-ram systems, I'd try "dsl 2"
and see if you can get to a shell prompt.

With higher pcu/ram systems, there are more options for you..
A system with over 128MB ram might try
" dsl dma toram " with many more options available.

Once you get past the boot: prompt,
running dsl from the floppy booted system should behave
just like any other DSL .

Hi,

I have cdrom, floppy drive but no usb ...

floppy will boot tomsrootboot ;-)

cdrom will not run from startup..

I have an old dsl boot disc but it did not work ,,, i'll try 0.8.0

the odd thing is cdrom will not see my burnt iso's ;-S

(under windows 95)

thanks again for your help ;-)

Ok...

tried 0.8.0 boots fine but drops to reduced shell

no image found

Toms root boot ... tells me cdrom is at /dev/hdb

but will not mount dsl cdrw ....

Do I need to burn dsl in a different format  ???

I can mount a cdrom (cover disc) no problem.... under toms root boot

Help!!!!

Just to clarify your last posts..

1. You posted that you are trying to use a CDRW ? , not a CDR ?
Some drives do not support the CDRW format.  Try a regular CDR.

2. You posted that you can see a cover disk ( pressed CD ) , but even
in WIndows, you cannot read the CDRW , again, try a CDR, and see if
Windows will read it.

3. Once you get a CD that the drive is happy with the boot-0.8.0.img
floppy you made should find the CDR , and continue booting from it..
( without that reduced shell message. )

4. If you find that your cdrom drive will not read ANY burned discs,
but only pressed discs, it may be necessary to try this from a USBkey,
or other storage media.
