Laptops :: Problems With X on Thinkpad 365XD

I have successfully installed DSL to my old 365XD and it works great!  Right?

Well, almost.

The screen is actually LCD and I have an XF86Config file that I can use for it.  It works great under 3.3, but I haven't tried it in 4 as yet.

The problem is: I made the changes recommended by the XFree86 DSL installer to the /home/dsl/.xserverrc file, and when I startx I get a message telling me

"/usr/x11r6/bin/Xfree86 was not found" or something like that, then X fails to start.

the correct XF86Config-4 file is there, but I can find no instance of XFree86 installed under the dsl account.

The colors on the screen are about to kill my eyes.  Please help!

specific error message:

/home/dsl/.xserverrc: line 1: /usr/bin/X11R6/bin/XFree86: No such file or directory

followed by a cannot execute and xinit crashes (obvs).

update: i forgot to compile the installer with

myDsl-load XFree86.dsl

now that I did that, the color schema is all wrong.  this laptop was able to do reasonably good color in Windows as I recall but not so much with X.

aaaugh!  what can I do to fix this?  i am choosing the DSL fb800x600 at the loader, I've tried running Xsetup.sh, I've done all the things suggested here and from Google searches.  even the load-up DSL "Penguin" Screen from the LiveCD is more robust than my desktop!

Anyone?

anyone at all?  i have tried booting vga=normal and vga=788, either way its no good in X.  the old XFConfig file I have for 3.3 did beautiful graphics, this XFree86.dsl, I'm getting nowhere with. Xvesa is no good either.

any suggestions at all?

Having similar problems with IBM 600 Thinkpad.  This system has a 1024x768 display, but I am having the same issue.  Will let you know if I figure anything out.
