Title: Release Candidate for DSL 4.11
Post by: John on August 03, 2012, 09:22:06 AM
Here's the first Release Candidate for DSL 4.11

The changes in this release are a step toward making DSL a friendly alternative for older hardware.  I've fixed some bugs, updated some applications, and replaced others.

Applications:
Updated JWM to v2.1.0 (now supports rounding)
Updated Dillo to 3.0.2 (much improves CSS support)
Added xChat 1.8.9 (the last version that supported gtk1.2)
Added sic 1.1 IRC client
Added XCalc-color

Removed Applications:

flminicalc (http://buskersdiary.blogspot.com/2009/02/vie-de-merde.html)
gphone (crashes)
naim/nicq/nirc (naim & nicq not updated to new protocol)

Fixed:
wallpaper.lua so that it works with color selection.
getman
updated links that have changed (mydsl, forums, etc.)

Modified Desktop Functionality:

It is now possible to switch between JWM & Fluxbox without shutting down X; I had to modify and add a few scripts to accomplish this.
Added menu items to switch between DFM & xtdesk icon engines or use none at all.
Added JWM menu to display or not display icons in menu.
Added menu items for backgrounds and theme fetch & display for both JWM and Fluxbox so that one does not need to launch and navigate DFM to select.
Added option to load the default background to native themes while allowing wallpaper.lua to override.
Coordinated default JWM & Fluxbox themes; they have the same color scheme and mood.
Used "orangetheme.thm" by Lucky13Linux for JWM, as well as modded the taskbar, menu and window decor so that they all take up less space.

Thank you to GPedde (http://gpedde.deviantart.com/) for letting DSL use Maintenance (http://gpedde.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2qdfvr).  I think it fits quite well with how I see DSL working on vintage hardware.

Please test away!  The kernel and hardware detection will be the exact same as 4.4.10, and obviously this release will not work with the latest hardware technology, but that isn't my intention here.  I see this version of DSL (what will probably be called "classic" eventually) becoming dedicated to bringing a usable and friendly desktop in the smallest package possible.  "Classic" DSL will remain ultra-portable, can be downloaded and run virtually quickly, and most importantly, will run on hardware that the rest of the world is leaving behind.

First quick live test...... hardware a bit newer than the target but........ Booted to a 1024x768 desktop with working sound and internet out of the box. All apps I've tried so far appear to be working.

Code:
dsl@box:~$ free
              total         used         free       shared      buffers
  Mem:      1033364       138796       894568            0         2372
 Swap:      1228932            0      1228932
Total:      2262296       138796      2123500
dsl@box:~$

Code:
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+

FULLNAME="Realtek|RTL-8139"
DRIVER="8139too"

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev c1)

Going to replace my frugal install of 4.4.10 with this for further tests and I'll drag out some older hardware tomorrow too. Looks pretty solid.

Good to see that DSL is back to being listed as "active" again on Distrowatch too.

Getting this message in Dillo while trying to post, but doesn't appear in BonEcho....

Thanks for the testing James, I appreciate it.  I emailed Ladislav and he was kind enough to change DSL's status.  I'll investigate the error in the forums, it could be Dillo or this sub-forum settings.

Looks like that error message was a result of how SMF works.  It actually has that error in the html and then relies on rendering to block it out.  I did a quick hack to keep it from showing.

I just downloaded it and will be installing it on my aging Thinkpad T42. I'll let you know how it goes.

For some time I have been objecting to people who reported DSL as a 'dead' distribution, saying it would change when change was needed. I still believe that DSL is better for older hardware and for small virtual appliances.
This announcement is a wonderful and refreshing validation of my faith and loyalty.

Thank you!

After a smooth HD install, I am happy  to restart with DSL. Everything works' out of the box', including the' Remote Desktop '- all under 100MB RAM!.

Is there any plan to create a DSL for ARM ? ( Raspberry Pi board, MK802 mini computer etc) ?

Holy Snap!  there is activity!  a updated forum with my old user deleted!  a New DSL version to boot!  this is all exciting news!

John did you fix the repository issue with the current stable?  it seems DSL was unable to link to ibilio using the MyDSL program.  this was the largest complain when it came to the IRC chat channel.  it seems Ibilio had changed some things around and did some updates which is around the time that pretty much all the repositories ceased to work.

Another issue is even though DSL is based on a very old version of Debian there has been some issues with people getting apt and dpkg working in DSL.  this is especialy notorious when one tries to install GCC via apt.  any ideas?

The live CD boots and runs great on my PentiumIII. I was surprised to see a 2.4 kernel. However, I cannot get it to boot in VirtualBox. I have tried several different combinations of VirtualBox configurations, along with DSL boot parameters. minirt24.gz is successfully uncompressed. The boot process is hanging at booting the kernel.

Post by: John on August 05, 2012, 05:27:08 AM
Hi Mir, the old forum is archived, as is the wiki.  They are both static html.  There is just too much information on those pages to lose.  The repository problem was two folds, the default URL for ibiblio was changed and the MyDSL system was not able to update the URL list because it grabbed it from the download page on this website -- those links needed to be revised too.  In this RC I fixed the default link so that it works out of the box.  Hopefully this saves you some work in the IRC channel.

Re:GCC Probably the best thing for most to do is grab gcc from the repository.  That said, I just went through the apt process and  grabbed gcc2.95.  Make & gcc are separate installations.  One issue was that I had to manually install fileutils by using --force-all in dpkg.  If you start getting into dev packages you are going to have a lot of conflicts.  It would be better to have a woody dev environment and transfer the compiled programs over.

djohnston, I have no experience with virtualbox, but judging from this url (http://virtualboxes.org/images/damn-small/) it looks like the KNOPPIX file needs to be uncompressed.

Another quick hardware detection check.......everything working out of the box again.

 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz

DRIVER="e100"

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Excellent hardware detection as always.

Sneekylinux just put out a DSL video on Youtube too....but for some reason I can't post a link.

Got it working in the latest beta Virtualbox.

This is a very useful distro and glad to see its return!

Hi---great to see a new release in the works.  I downloaded 4.11rc1 and burned it to a cdrom with k3b.  The slowest I could get my desktop to burn it was 16x.  The disk loads great on my old compaq laptop (k6II 433 Mhz, 192M Ram) and seems to be happy there. So far, everything I have tried seems to work.

I am not having such good luck with my newer machines, an AthlonII-64 and an Atom Dual Core 64 bit machine.  The Athlon box starts to boot and goes looking for the cdrom, can't locate it and goes into a non-functional shell...no keyboard response, nothing).  The Atom box displays 4 penguins and stops right there.  If I try to run the Atom box in expert mode, it reports a keyboard controller error repetitively, non-stop.  Of course these are not the targets of this distro, but not sure why they don't run at all.

Paul

Later:  Tried on a neighbor's late model HP laptop with dual core pentium and had the same problem as with the Athlon above...hung after trying to find the cdrom.

John,

The URL you're pointing to has links for compressed and uncompreesed disk images. (I had to delete the embedded link in order to post this.) My problem is, (now was), booting from the iso file. I tried the latest KNOPPIX, which of course, has the KNOPPIX image file in the iso. It boots just fine. I then tried to boot from the dsl-4.4.10.iso and from the dsl-4.4.10-initrd.iso with no success.

However, the solution to my problem was very simple. Since mrmango wasn't forthcoming with any information, the problem was that VirtualBox had assigned a SATA hard drive to the VM. After deleting it and creating a PATA drive, the 4.11.RC1 iso booted quickly to the desktop using the default options. I don't know if this has ever come up before, but that was the solution in my case.

John,

After looking around the forum a bit, I saw your link to the boot cheat codes. I think the dsl sata cheatcode will work with a SATA drive, but I'll have to check it. You may already know whether it will or not.

EDIT: I tried booting in VirtualBox with a SATA drive in port 0. The cheat code used was dsl sata. I tried all three previously mentioned isos with the same boot parameters, but none would boot with a SATA drive attached. It could have something to do with how VirtualBox defines the (pseudo) controller.

Hi, just registered, I've been a fan of DSL for many years now and was excited to see some new motion on it.  Just one comment, I regularly use VirtualBox on top of Windows for linux, and found that the mouse was either unresponsive or only minimal movement... I already had one VM open (Mint) at the time.  Will fool about with it some more.

Anyway, thanks! :)

I booted it in the most recent virtualbox twice and it hanged after 10 or so minutes while using firefox.
I booted it a third time, changed the video memory from 5mb to 32mb and it seems to be ok. It was runnig for 27 minutes.
I closed it and opened it again and it's been ok.
I also installed no-ip from mydsl.

It has 128mb ram assigned and no harddisk. It's running on a 2.80 pentium D.
That's all my troubleshooting sorry I don't have anything more specific.

Just booted the .ISO into Virtual Box... runs great... haven't tried any installs yet. Sadly, I don't have any hardware to test on.

128MB RAM
8MB VRAM
Ethernet works great.
I set the machine properties to "Linux, Linux 2.4" just to be safe.

EDIT: Just did a HDD install following the instructions on the old Wiki. Seems to be working great. 2GB Virtual HDD.

Hello,

I have a 4.4.10 hard drive DSL working decently on an old HP Omnibook 6000 (Pentium III) with 256M of RAM.
I use a WiFi key from Hamlet, HNWU254G_RTL that works also nice. I struggled a little bit to have it working because I am not a linux expert. I am also using a USB port extension from Hamlet and a wireless mouse from Trust that get recognised easily. I did some configuration work on that installation that I like.
I would like to try 4.11RC2.
Is it possible to upgrade without loosing the current configuration or I will need to start from the scratch?

Thanks.
Victor
