Damn Small Linux (DSL) Forums

I am in the process of building a new version of DSL and I'm reevaluating the application selection.  If you are a fan of a lightweight app and would like to see it in the next version of DSL list it here.

This is my list on favourite cli apps:

dict - DICT Protocol Client (Dictionary Server Protocol)
alpine - an Alternatively Licensed Program for Internet News and Email
newsbeuter - an RSS feed reader for text terminals
MOC - console audio player
elinks - lynx-like alternative character mode WWW browser
centerim - a text mode based IM client for Linux, *BSD, Sun Solaris, MacOS X and possibly, other Unices. ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM TOC, IRC,
       MSN, Gadu-Gadu and Jabber protocols are now supported. Internal LiveJournal client and RSS reader are also provided.
weather - command-line tool to obtain weather conditions and forecasts
twidge - Microblogging client for Twitter, Identica

I would suggest that the next DSL include the XZ compression program as this format is becoming quite common nowadays. I compiled XZ-Utils a while ago (I might make an extension if get around to it) and it came to 3.4MB in total, though a lot of things could probably be left out to reduce this size.

Am very interested in lightweight applications.  Personally, I'm using dplus ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/dplus-browser/ ) instead of dillo.  I have applications I need to run on Linux, FreeBSD and Windows and dplus works better cross-platform than dillo.  Would be curious to hear what you're using in place of flminicalc.  I have flcalc building successfully.  There's also a calculator with Fox Toolkit and there's a lua script to run a calculator within SciTE (my current favorite programming editor).  I've been experimenting with writing a theme changer for jwm.  Several of the lightweight applications I like are listed at http://www.distasis.com/cpp/osrclist.htm  I'm currently working on finding lightweight applications, writing scripts to automate the build processes for them and modifying the code to fit my needs as necessary.  Would love to share ideas and code.

Since I'm a Puppy user  I like SeaMonkey. :) Are you familiar with   http://www.lamarelle.org/mo-zi-lla/mozilla.php  browser builds?

As long as you have standard office software (a word processor and spreadsheet) and some basic tools (calculator, etc) I'll be happy :)

There's mention in an old Cinepaint thread ( http://osdir.com/ml/video.cinepaint.devel/2004-04/msg00009.html ) about FL-GTK, a compatibility layer for GTK 1 applications to build using FLTK.  FLTK's been through some changes, so a library like this would probably need an update.  However, FLTK 1.3 now has some internationalization (Unicode and UTF-8) support which is a plus.  I'm currently working with a patched version of FLTK 1.3 that offers themes by setting the FLTK_SCHEME environment variable.  So, there is some theme changing capability in version 1.3 too.  It would be really nice if we could port some useful GTK 1.2 applications over to FLTK 1.3.  There are also quite a few applications that already work with FLTK including a desktop (Equinox Desktop Environment).  Other applications available for FLTK include graphics editors and viewers, a beta version of Cinepaint Glasgow, flwriter (word processor), two lightweight browsers (dillo and dplus), a xine front end (multimedia player), daily journal program, todo and disk usage utilities, minimal file manager, alsamixergui, games and a nice front end to synclient for touchpad users.

If anyone would be interested in something like this, I'd be very willing to help attempt to port some other applications over to FLTK 1.3.

Anyways I like alot of the apps in dsl, but what about ROX-filer?

Lots of 'em.   I like apps that do what they are supposed to and don't waste processing power.

Beaver is my editor of choice, and Nano in a shell, so it's great to see these retained in the new release candidate.     

Would like to see a gxine.dsl for GTK+.  I was able to install Xine.dsl through MyDSL, but this version of Xine has some trouble with fullscreen mode on my Celeron Mendicino machine, while gxine works well in Puppy, on the same machine.   It presumably would also do so (or better) in DSL, so a .dsl extension for that would be nice to see.

No matter what distro one uses, Flash for YouTube will soon be an issue since Adobe is ending Linux support and YouTube will inevitably update its requirements.  Luckily, I have become accustomed to downloading YT vids through KeepVid and such, and playing them back through Xine, or through the DOS DUGL Player which runs flawlessly in DOSEMU.  Perhaps a look at gnash is in order.   It would be nice to see a Linux substitute for Adobe.

I love the performance of dsl 4.11rc2.  Love the ability to boot from CD-RW, and load add-ons from usb.  Unfortunately, the lack of flash support and a more recent web browser make many websites unusable. As much as I like performance, it's better to have functionality.  Looking for another distro. . .

A Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128k emulator would be a nice addition to DSL. Spectrum emulators are very small and lightweight and lots of games are available

Which Spectrum emulator to use?

Which one to use = whichever one will work on DSL with the least dependencies (ie NOT GTK2 or QT) and highest speed and can emulate the 128k Spectrum model.
