Title: Re: Current version: 4.4.10? Post by: MPS on May 22, 2018, 08:08:22 AM Is the system kernel expected to be updated in the foreseeable future, although it would be up to 2.6 ?
Title: Re: Current version: 4.4.10? Post by: CNK on May 23, 2018, 10:56:29 PM The old kernel version is used in order to retain support for older hardware, because many drivers have been dropped from later kernel versions. It may also help keep the total size down to the 50MB target. Updates have aimed to keep the user level software as recent as possible while retaining the advantage in size and compatibility.
DSL-N was made without these restrictions, and used the 2.6 kernel. I would imagine that a new version of DSL-N would be based on one of the current kernel versions. I would very much like that the project would be more live like the same tiny core linux Title: Re: Current version: 4.4.10? Post by: CNK on June 01, 2018, 11:03:36 PM John seemed interested in developing something like a new DSL-N when he restarted the forum, but it doesn't look hopeful that anything will come of it.
Personally I'm more interested in updating the software in the main DSL as much as is possible while keeping the 2.4 kernel and the compatibility with older hardware that comes with it. I don't have time to make a proper effort at that myself though. Title: Re: Current version: 4.4.10? Post by: MPS on June 04, 2018, 03:17:04 AM And is not the 2.6 (and 3.9) kernel having more supported hardware?
Title: Re: Current version: 4.4.10? Post by: CNK on June 04, 2018, 10:51:37 PM It supports more newer hardware, less older hardware.
