You are so kind to reply so fully and nicely. Thank you. I know for certain, from your description, it is WAY, WAY over my head ... and I am willing to admit that. On that note, I will abandon the notion ... and thank you immensely.

Damn Small Linux / Other Help Topics / boinc
|

Greetings. Based on available categories, this looks like the place for this post.
Old Windows ME desktop. Celeron (coppermine) cpu, 512 MB RAM, 8GB HD, CD R/O drive, nonbootable USB 1.1 ports.
Need to conserve all the RAM and disk space as possible. Only wish to run BOINC ... pretty much a dedicated intent. Can even boot off CD then run BOINC if best.
Thing is getting the help with everything. Has to be step by step. I am no experienced Linux person but can follow (distinct) instructions.
Any takers? Thank you in advance.

Damn Small Linux / HD Install / DSL noob with DNS problems

Just installed DSL current version a couple of hours ago. Fairly certain I did it right. . but maybe not. Hard drive install. Everything seems to want to work except accessing online. I'm ethernet connected to router, but can't ping anything but myself.
ifconfig looks fine but maybe not .. I am posting this from an Android tablet need to minimize typing.
Setup/Net setup/netcardconf interface eth0 DHCP broadcast. Yes
If I change to no
Interface eth0 Address IP blank Mask. 255.255.255.0 Broadcast blank Gateway blank Nameserver (s) 192.168.29.1 and blank.
Ifconfig only lists 'lo' .. no ethernet. ' The imprint on the desktop says Host: box and an IP address. If anyone can tell me where to go from here, I thank you in advance.
So far, I really like DSL. Came off of Lubuntu for it. It is just right for this old machine.
