Hi everyone,

I am trying to use DSL 4.4.10 with my old Toshiba Portege 3490. I wish to turn it into a hylafaxserver.
It has Lucent Winmodem and DSL just works with it on booting. So it is why I prefer DSL to other distros.

I wish to install Hylafax , however there is no ready made setup in Mydsl for it.

Additionally, I need help to:

1- Make DSL work like a normal distro, that is, to install on hdd and every change is being recorded.
Instead of frugal, I installed to hd using dsl-hdinstall script.
However, everything I install seems to be removed on next booting... Mydsl does not contain any software I install.
When I restart, the menu asks for backup/restore, which I do not want. I just want to have it work normal.

The grub boot string is , "kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda2 quiet vga=normal dma
I removed frugal string from boot but it just did not change anyting.

I do not want to use bootlocal.sh and install all apps on everyboot, their settings would go back to default right?
I wish to preserve them.

2- Instead of Mydsl , I am trying to use Apt-get and Synaptics, however, I get errors.
I am trying to find a mirror which is compatible with DSL 4.4.10 and uptodate.
For some reason I can not access archive.debian.org.
Therefore need to select alternatives. I tried the ones in the /etc/apt/sources.list
However I am getting the attached result. ( error.jpg )

I am trying to install, mc , nmap , vncserver, samba , cups , synaptics , hylafax-server
I can install all except hylafax from mydsl but next reboot , the installation goes away. Only dsl and uci files remain in mydsl folder.

Is there any way to install these packages via apt-get so they will be permanent all settings will be preserved?
Which urls , mirror are suitable for using apt-get in DSL 4.4.10 ?

3- Once getting Apt-get to work, I am hoping to install Hylafax-server , if only I can get apt-get to work well, then I hope to install all the packages with it.

Thanks,
Burak

No help from anyone  Huh

Any way just wanted to share that I found following links and apt-get seems to be work somehow.

However, even the installation hylafax-server began I am still getting errors. If anyone can help me to install hylafax-server, I would be so happy.

It's tricky to get Apt working because DSL is based on such an old system. Even if you did get it to work, you'd be limited to an old version of the software you want to run. You need to use a package respository for Debian 3 "Woody", packages.debian.net is the official archive.

If the program isn't in the MyDSL respository, then the best option these days is to compile the software from source. Though you need to check that it, and its dependancies, will work with v. 2.4 of the Linux Kernel.

There's a guide to compiling software here (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/creating_a_compressed_extension_from_source.html). You don't need to make a tar.gz package for the MyDSL respository, but you are encouraged to so that you can help others who want the program.

That page doesn't tell you how to set up a compiling environment. An easy way to do this is to first install the following packages from the MyDSL repository: gcc1-with-libs, gnu-utils, compile-3.3.5.

For making changes in DSL permanent, see the DSL Wiki pages on "Persistance" and "HDD Install". You'll need a HDD Install if you're going to compile software without making MyDSL extensions as well.
