Tested on:

Toshiba Satellite 995MHz 240meg ram 40 gig hard drive.

The boot up was going great. Auto detected everything as far as I could tell. Gets to scanning for hard disk partitions and creating /etc/fstab...
and hangs there. No other activity.

If you could post some error output is the kind of information that can help others to help you, so far the info you gave don't help much.
