Som linux distros can be booted directly from the hard drive using grub2. Can this be done with the DSL iso? The BIOS of my PC doesn't have an option for booting from usb flash drive.

There is plenty of info about this in the wiki (www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/). You should be able to boot from USB by using the bootable floppy disk (or other methods), then install to HDD after that.

Booting from usb is not an option because there is usb device option in the BIOS boot order. I have an Asus A7V8X-X mobo.

For some reason I always assumed that there was no usb boot option in my BIOS. I checked it and there are two usb options: usb fdd and usb zip. I'm looking into the DSL wikipages (USB Booting, Installing to a USB Flash Drive).

Well if you can't configure the BIOS to work, the bootable floppy disk gets around the inability of your BIOS to boot from your USB memory stick. The BIOS simply boots to the floppy disk, this contains the software that may then load Linux from the USB memory stick.
