So since 2008 i have been given operator privlages on the official Damnsmalllinux irc channel hosted on freenode.  Sadly a few months ago the network was taken over by a new owner who says they have the opensource communities interest in mind.  Sadly their actions have alienated enough of the old staff we relied on to help protect the DSL irc channel that a majority of them resigned with open letters (one letter linked below).

What does this have to do with #damnsmalllinux?  Well a number of project channels have recently been taken over by the new owners, removing control of the project channel and giving control to unknown entities.  Many project have recently abandoned freenode to go to a new network started by the old staff of freenode on irc.libera.chat.  For all intents and purposes it is only a matter of time before the offical irc channel is taken voer by the new owner of freenode and control of the channel passed on.

I have not talked to anyone involved directly in the development of Damnsmalllinux since 2012, or around the time of the last official release.  This is a call out so see if we should continue having the official irc channel on the now hostile freenode network or migrate to libera.  The downside of the migration is the amount of modifications that will need to be done in documentation, on the site, here on the forum and so on.

For now i will remain on freenode as the sole custodian of the #damnsmalllinux irc channel.  Hopefully i can hear back from someone either here or on freenode or even on libera ( i am squatting on the channel there) to get some feedbak on which is the best course of action to take.

Thank you and i look forward to hearing back on this subject.

A slight update.  Freenode forked and purged all accounts databases and settings.  #damnsmalllinux no longer exists and is no longer under the control of anyone involved with the project past or present

We do have a channel on Libera but until i get in contact with the owner of the project i cannot go forth to make it a community channel.
