New to DSL need guidance

I am looking at using DSL to install to an external zip/thumb drive to carry with me. I looked over the home page, and the download page, I found a place an the applications page where it says you can create your own custom cd. I know that I want to change most of the applications included with it, so can someone give me some guidance on exactly where to get the core file, along with the other applications. I know I can just install the core distro, then play store the rest, so I guess my question is, where can I download the core file, and does anyone have any suggestions that might make this an easier and better process than what I'm looking at right now?

Here is the download directory for the core release (http://distro.ibiblio.org/damnsmall/dslcore/).
If you plan on compiling new software rather than just grabbing MyDSL packages, keep in mind that the old 2.4 kernel can limit compatibility with a lot of software. Make sure you check the requirements for both the software you want, and the dependencies that the new programs have.

If it helps, I'd suggest purchasing "The Official Damn Small Linux Book" via Amazon. It can found for a very reasonable price and contains a good amount of information about DSL and how to really make it work. The book including installing to USB drives and Zip drives. Not only does it give a good overview of DSL, it also gets into the "nuts and bolts" of the OS. I would certainly suggest looking into obtaining this book, then I suspect you could really make your DSL install work for you and also make it run very smoothly.
