Thought it was in conky but can't check right now. I guess that's the first question -- what environment do you use--JWM or Flux? There are JWM tools, too, which are different. At some point, it's where the information comes from and at that point I think many people just put a bar up in their conky config (if it's not already there).
The antiX people have surely beaten this all up over the years. From what I've gathered, there's a strong disincentive regarding the more full-featured power-managers so they make leaner tools (mostly for IceWM). Start searching there and I will as well--just need to return to it later.
Honestly, probably the fastest way to do it is to get a copy of antiX-full (23.X) and poke around in there until you see how it does it. That'll transfer to DSL 100%. If you want it in the tray, I think people swipe the xfce deal unless your way is preferable. Check this out and please share your own thoughts/input.

Edit: This is suggesting that wmacpi (not installed but installable) will work in the slit in Fluxbox (or at least used to). HOWEVER this suggests that it doesn't. Unable to test but wanted the info out in case someone else is in a position to look at it. It becomes extra entries in ~/.fluxbox/startup I know, tray is not slit but it's also not conky. Can't recall how I did this but redshift icon worked.
