buy a floppy and write the floppy image on it, providing here:

the wiki should help you further on booting from a floppy.
I do not know if the external cdrom is recognized.

Hi,

there are a lot of issues in your message, and I am not able to answer to all, but I shall try to help you a bit:

a. CD-ROM: If your CD-ROM has been recognized, i.e. if you see the logo of DSL, your are OK; it means that your computer can run the CD-ROM, and normally, it runs the CD until the end, when x should starts; but you say: it hangs after showing you the DSL prompt; so, you can try to boot in modus 'dsl 2' (please, browse the forum in order to know why); if nothing helps, there is probably a problem with your CD, not your device, but the disc; you may try to burn another one and retry;

b. install on disk: it could be the solution; make a frugal install on your disk again; please, at boot prompt use dsl init 2 and then cfdisk in order to format your disk and partition it to have a brand new install; I usually use 3 partitions with 50 MB on hda1 (your first one), some space on hda5 (or 6, or 7, depending on your configuration)  and a swap (twice the size of your RAM if you are under 500-700 MB Ram); once partitioned and correctly formated (= it can take two three reboots in order to format your hd properly if you have old materials), run the CD-ROM and install from the mydsl menu; choose frugal install (f.ex. with Grub which is in my opinion easier to configure); restart and you should ready to go;

c. grub hangs: there is a lot of possible issues regarding this; when you use dsl 2.4 RC1 or RC2, it is possible that you have such a problem as I have one also related to grub (impossible to get the boot logo of the cd on my laptop, grub starts faster).

Hope it will help you.
yours
z

Because you are using a second cd drive maybe you could try adding the option:
dsl fromhd=/dev/scd2
Code Sample
dsl fromhd=/dev/sda

But then it depends, it could be sdb, sdc, try all of them.
