Have you tried using fb from boottime? ie., at the dsl prompt, type in "fb1024x768" or "fb800x600". This works on my FX5200, I know I had a heap of troubles and tried what I thought was every combination of options, but "fb1024x768" at boottime worked fine.
Depending on your monitor, I could maybe send you a copy of my XF86Config-4 file etc., if your setup's a standardish CRT it should (maybe) work OK. You'd just need to put the XFree86.dsl, nvidia.dsl, and (my) nvidia-configs.tar.gz in the root of a MyDSL iso to get it all loaded up by default.
But yeah, "fb1024x768" or "fb800x600" at boottime may (should?) work.
