Ok, so I got DSL onto a CD and was able to boot it on my PC...but now I have a few problems.
First off, I can't install my printer. I've looked on the boards and wiki for DSL and saw alot about printers, but I didn't see a definitive solution. I have a Lexmark X1150 Inkjet (closest thing in the printer config utility was 1100, so I installed it but it just will not respond to print commands).
My second problem is that I can't get Sylpheed configured to work with my email account. I set everything up and pressed get all but it just said "receiving" or whatever for like 20 minutes. I have a feeling, in this case, that it's something to do with my email provider cuz I had similar problems using Mozilla Thunderbird in Windows.
My final problem (so far

) is probably the biggest problem...nothing I save, do, or configure in DSL is saved after I shut down the computer. Every document, file, application is lost. Every setting I change is gone. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is saved between one session and another. I have to reinstall my modem, reinstall any applications that I installed/downloaded! I don't know where alll those files are going! Any help? I know there must be some way to correct this! I have taken a liking to OpenOffice.org and it takes about 20-30 minutes to install every single time I start up Linux!

O, I almost forgot, is there a way I can access all the files on my hard drive thru Linux? I try to type in the paths to files (documents, music, etc.) on my hard drive, but Linux doesn't even recognize a command as simple as "cd C:\". Now I know Linux isn't based on MS DOS, and therefore uses a different language, but I've tried many different possible commands to no avail. Like, I'm still using the same hard drive, right? So why don't I have access to all my files?

I don't know about printers or Sylpheed.

You can save your configurations:
How to save settings (from the FAQ)

You can "mount" your hard drives:
Fordie's introduction to the desktop.

Once your hard drives are mounted, open up EmelFM, and go to /mnt/hdxx (where xx = whatever). There's yourself.

And Linux does use a "different language" than windows. I'd suggest starting here to read up on the command line.

Finally, why does it take 20 - 30 minutes to install Open Office?

There have been issues with printing in linux in general but dsl is very good and will use many printers..if you want to get going and seem to have issue with aspfilters you may like to try cups.dsl..it is similar but uses the browser to configure and worked for me as a quicker solution
sylpheed should work for your pop mail...it is not set to ssl by default..try some of the options
If you are useing a frugal install then you need to learn how to backup/restore and maby persistant home..you need to mount your partitions via the slit befor saveing to them or this info may be lost..your downloads may be in ram and so are lost when shut down..
If you create a partition and mount it when you boot and make a directory to store downloads then you can access by, as said, opening the file manager and open mount and open directory...stick with it..one thing at a time and you will be solid in no time...hope this helps..try getting the install and storage working and tested..then work on the downloads and installs it may save time...also have a look at the post near to this " my settings arn't being saved"

Thanks, cmanb, for the links to the wiki. I'm not sure I quite understand what "mounting" is though. Next, you say to go to "/mnt/hdxx (where xx = whatever)", but I don't know what "whatever" should be.
Next, do you think it would be possible to use my usb key to back up linux and all that but still keep other files and docs on it? I'm just wondering because I don't want to go out and buy another key and I wouldn't know how to do this drive partitioning thing!

If it helps..hd means harddisk..they are lettered in order..hda, hdb,hdc.etc.the partitions on the drives are numbered...hda1,hda2,hdb1,hdb2.etc..so as example your boot partition may be hda1, your storage may be hda2, your swap file may be hda3 if you only had one drive...if you have a second drive then your storage may be hdb1..I do not know your drive config..your cdrom can be hdb, hda is usually the primary drive. if hdb was the cd then hdc may be secondary haveing partitions 1,2 etc..the boot partition is auto mounted, the others are mountable via the slit on the desktop by clicking the button hda1 , it switches from one to the other ( hda1,hda2),green is mounted red is not, click the red (unmounted) and mount (green..) you can then go to emelfm and click mnt and right click and open and find the partition you wish to view..you can create directories and sub dir's on the partitions much like a folder in win..
