have installed dsl on my harddisk. Im trying to install openoffice, apt-get has been made to work and i have installed tn5250. when i try apt-get install openoffice.org i get the following error. package openoffice.org has no available  verson, but exists in the database.  this typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency andnever uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not abvailable with the contents of sources.list.   i have read about a few people who have installed openoffice from within  this forum. i was hoping someone could tell   me how to do it

You'll need an apt source that offers it for download.

been their, tried that. kept coming up with the same error message about not having the following depends: openoffice.org-bin. emailed chris hall who maintains that site, he said to do a apt-get install openoffice.org-bin, which i did. then i got a problem depends: libfreetype6(<2.1.0) but 2.1.2-9 is to be installed.
email back to chris and he said " ah. those packages are only compatible with the woody version of libfreetype, which is 2.0.9. i guess you have installed a newer libfreetype for some reason."  i believe you are right about needing the correct source to download but the site you just gave me won't work. is it possible i downloaded a newer version of libfreetype when i downloaded mozilla ???

Not sure about libfreetype, remember that DSL is not standard Debian so maybe that version wasn't installed? Maybe you can remove the version you already have and apt will install the correct one, but I'm not sure so don't try it unless you don't mind it not working!

Just checked that site and it does work so try again.

well i never really could figure out how to get my old libfreetype file back, so i tried something elese. i put woody unstable into my source.list file. i had noted that openoffice was not in the sable woody so what the heck, i'll give it a try.  downloaded something like 60 packages. when i start open office from the bash shell error messages start saying things like "an error occurred while copying the file ooo654writer.desktop to /home/damnsmall/.gnome2.vfolders/applications an error occurred while copying a file" but it does start up and run. i think i've reached the point of "do over", think its best to do a fresh hd-install from dsl then install openoffice first, i believe i'll have far less problems installing OO.  also i really didn't want to install mozilla, i wanted to install firebird (smaller faster) i think mozilla is were this problem began. after i reload dsl on the harddisk and after i install openoffice i will be looking for where to download firebird, it doesnt seem to be in woody stable either. the following is a list of programs that i have to have:
tn5250
firebird
samba
openoffice

thanks for the help, will be asking again "how to" as soon i reload.
