The menu item and icon commands are identical, so there must be something weird happening that may not relate specifically to mplayer. It may be the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable not being passed properly for some reason.
What happens when you launch /opt/mplayer/gmplayer from a terminal? Do you see any weird messages in the term? If you get no problems, here's another test: Close xtdesk Start xtdesk from a terminal Launch mplayer from the desktop icon and see if you get any errors in the terminal when loading a divx file.
I may need to add a PATH to the wrappers in /opt/mplayer, but it doesn't seem like that should make a difference if it works fine from the menu.
