i finally got the knoppix 5.0 dvd.......WOW! holy-hell-of-a-software-repository! man there are so many packages on this disk....wow. this is really the power users linux. so i am running this on my wife's winblows machine (2.7ghz, 2gb ram, 200gb hd) and it sees everything, even has a working webcam module. it boots kind of slow, but once its up in the toram mode it flies. i haven't the stones to mess around with the ntfs writing ability, but i can sure read from ntfs........more to follow on this (long as the better half doesn't catch me messing with her writing box).

Is that a bought disk or a download burned disk?

Knoppix has always been a slow loading OS, but they sure have the auto HD and configuration down pat. I know of several other minor distros that use that script.

The last time I booted up knoppix it had about 10 or 12 wordprocessors and non worth typeing on..who with a machine powerfull enough to run it is interested in command line text editors..for what you need to run it you would think they would just pick the best and leave the rest...kinda like...well dsl..only bigger...dare I say..NOT..I think knoppix needs a lesson in frugal thinking..then again I have not booted 5.0

Bought it on ebay for .99......

lovedsl.....dont get me wrong. dsl is my daily driver. my little lappy would be slower than leap year solar eclipses trying to run knoppix 5.0. but for somebody with power to spare, there is just no comparing the 2 distros. we are truly talking apples and oranges. much of what we know today as dsl springs from knoppix internals, and it is good stuff. no for those of us with "legacy" machines, dsl is king. but for my money the knoppix 5.0 distro is by far and away the best "power computing" livecd.

As I see it, "much of what we know today as dsl" comes from Robert's hard work and innovative thinking.  DSL actually has very little in common with Knoppix once the knoppix-autoconfig script finishes its run.
