On a 166mhz with 32mb ram, you might want to make some changes to free up resources as much as you can. Use a very basic theme like minimal if you use fluxbox, or try jwm instead. Turn off icons, dockapps, and torsmo. Consider some low-resource alternatives to applications launched from desktop icons: midnight commander instead of emelfm, mpg321 and ogg123 instead of xmms, vim or nano instead of beaver, dillo instead of firefox. Lower your screen resolution and color depth. Create a swap partition if you haven't already done it.
